Fire prevention week underway in the Lakeland

Fire prevention week is underway across the Lakeland. The week has its roots after the “Great Chicago Fire” tore through the major city back in the late 1800s and has been held starting October 6th since 1922.

Cold Lake Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Prevention Officer Norm Hollis says although the topic of preventing a fire gets highlighted around this time, his group likes it to be on everyone’s mind during the year.

“Fire prevention week is just one week. We like to promote fire prevention all year long, 365 days a year.”

This year’s theme is “Not every hero wears capes, plan and practice your escape.” Cold Lake Fire and Rescue is hosting an open house on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at the north and south fire halls. Hollis says it’s a great opportunity to meet crews and ask questions.

“If you do have any problems with smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, just come to a fire hall and talk to a firefighter. Ask questions. We’ll help as best as we can.”

More information about fire prevention week is at its official website.
