Cold Lake Wings folding before start of 2019 season

The Cold Lake Wings are apparently no more. In a Facebook post late Tuesday evening, the club announced it was suspending operations for the 2019-2020 Greater Metro Junior Hockey League season.

The statement says the club finds it “…simply impossible to properly operate a business with 3 Junior teams in the same small market.” The Wings were founded last summer and originally played out of the Western Provinces Hockey Association in the US-based Western States Hockey League.

After the Wings severed ties with the WSHL earlier in 2019 another Cold Lake franchise was brought in by that league, The Cold Lake Hornets. They are due to begin their inaugural season in three days.

The Wings had announced a new head coach and part-owner back in August.
