Climate Strike gathering planned for Bonnyville

A business in Bonnyville will be part of a worldwide demonstration for climate change. Getridofit Lakeland is set to host a climate strike demonstration on Friday in support of the movement.

Stephan Tremblay is the CEO of the recycling and clean-up company. He says the idea to join in on the movement was in-part based on 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

“I thought it was very important that we as a society become really aware of what is going on out there. She drives it home really good.”

A gathering is slated for Friday at noon at Getridofit’s thrift store on 54th Avenue in Bonnyville. Tremblay says he isn’t sure what the turnout will look like but says animosity against the local oil patch is not part of the day.

“This isn’t about fighting the oilfield. This is about realizing we all have a part to play in our kid’s life and in our grandchildren’s lives.”

More information on the planned gathering is at the business’s Facebook page. Tremblay invites all people down and says appropriate signs and flyers will be allowed.

“We have an obligation to our children and our grandchildren to try and fix our planet. So let’s do it, let’s try it now.”
