Cold Lake mayor gets provincial ears

The Mayor of Cold Lake has gotten a chance to grab the ear of some major players in the provincial government. Craig Copeland was at the “Mid-sized Cities caucus meeting” in Lethbridge earlier in September which featured an appearance and discussion with Premier Jason Kenney.

Copeland says he was pleased to hear of plans to try and bring investment back into the area.

“That really does affect our area. He did talk about the oil patch and possibly looking in the fall to modify the curtailment on the oil production and get more oil on the rail cars.”

On Wednesday Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs, Kaycee Madu was in the Lakeland to visit communities. Copeland had the chance to show off the city and sit down for a meeting.

One of the topics thought to have been brought up in the meeting was the ID-349 agreement, which was started in 2011 and saw a funding change in 2017 that left Cold Lake with less cash than in years passed. Copeland says other communities are interested in talking about the agreement as well.

“Certainly, the sustainability of Cold Lake and how we got here from back in 2011 is a conversation we’ll have with the minister and we’ll see where he wants to go from here.”

Cold Lake went from getting $25 million in the original agreement with the government to $16 million after the 2017 adjustment.
