Gears are moving on Cold Lake bike park

Even with obstacles ahead, Cold Lake Bicycle Park construction is gearing up to potentially begin at the end of the month. The project may be affected as provincial approvals are required in order for construction to begin.

On Tuesday, Council voted heavily in favour of the project after hearing a contractor had become available on short notice. The specialized construction may be able to have several kilometres of trails up this year, pending provincial approval and weather.

Mayor Craig Copeland says members of the community are heavily in support of the park coming to life.

“The city views the trails as a low-impact to the historical features of the radar station. But to do the historical designations, the level of impact will need to be determined by the Provincial Government before we can proceed, and we need to be mindful that this ask has come in quickly before detailed plans and approvals could be finalized. Staff will work through the approval process so that work can start as soon as possible.”

To ensure residents can fully utilize the park, construction will begin on “intermediate” and “basic” trails first. Further funding would be needed for additions including advanced trails.

The city is hopeful for a swift turn-around with the approvals so that construction can begin as soon as possible. The historical approvals are currently underway, with an expected date of late September to get things started.
