Kenney challenging C-69 in court

Jason Kenney is following through on promises to fight Bill C-69. The Alberta premier announced Tuesday that his UCP government would begin a constitutional challenge of the legislation.

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland has long been fighting the federal act with other leaders from across the Lakeland. He says he applauds the decision.

“I think what we need to do is change the way things have been in this country and bring back the resource sector in a big way. With the premier standing up to challenge Bill C-69, that’s the leadership we need.”

The bill came into force on August 28th. The announcement of the move to the courtroom came just one day before the writ was dropped and campaigning for the 2019 federal election began. Copeland says his hope is that the election will change the way of thinking when it comes to Canadian oil and gas come October.

“Remember what the last four years have been like and how it affected our area. Tell your eastern friends and family and out in British Columbia to get out and vote and help support the oil sector and the pipeline.”

Provincial Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer argued that the bill reached beyond the authority of the Canadian Parliament in his application to the Court of Appeals on Monday.
