A couple with roots in the Lakeland are the winners of the “Amazing Race Canada”. Anthony Johnson and Dr. James Makokis crossed the finish line first in Tuesday nights grand finale of the race in Muskoka, Ontario.
Makokis is a physician who was born in Saddle Lake and practices medicine in Edmonton and Kehewin. The team was known for competing in the race while wearing handmade red skirts and headbands featuring the letters MMIW, to honour the missing and murdered Indigenous women across the country.
The pair have won a trip around the world, $250,000 and a pair of new Chevrolet Blazer SUVs. Makokis and Johnston are currently in the middle of a GoFundMe campaign to try and get a healing centre built in Kehewin as well.
