Unemployment up slightly in August: StatsCan

Unemployment is up in the Lakeland, says Statistics Canada. The new monthly report out Friday from the federal statistics giant says the region, which falls under “Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake”, saw an increase in unemployment to 6.4 percent in August. That’s up from the 5.9 reported in July.

Stats-Can says Canada on the whole saw a slight increase in rates for August, going from 5.5 percent to 5.8 percent. Alberta saw a similar increase. The unemployment rate in the province is currently sitting at about 7.2 percent, up from the 6.8 percent estimated in July.

The largest rate of unemployment in the province seems to be in Edmonton, where 7.8 percent of people are out of work, says Stats-Can.
