School in session means safety is key: RCMP

School is back in session around the Lakeland and mounties are hoping the school year will be a safe one for students and adults alike. Drivers are reminded around the community to be extra vigilant when making their way through school zones. Bonnyville RCMP Staff Sergeant Sarah Parke says parents can have a talk with their young ones about road safety as well.

“For students: Only cross at designated crosswalks and controlled intersections, make eye contact with drivers and ensure the vehicles have come to a complete stop before crossing.”

Parke says parents can help by teaching kids the safest route to and from school. Drivers are reminded that school and playground zone speed limits are in effect. Parke says safety is the number one priority but mounties will be watching and it could cost a driver who is going too fast.

“Obviously, we don’t want that to be the main deterrent, we want people to be safe out there. If we are in a position where we need to issue a ticket, [the fine] can be quite hefty.
