The Cold Lake Fighter Jets are out of the 2019 Alberta Football League playoffs. That was the decision announced Thursday after the AFL board says it found the team guilty of allegations it had contravened the Alberta Football League Compensation Act.
AFL VP and sitting president for this case Tylor Johannesson says two players on the team had been paying to bring in players to compete on the club.
“It had come to light that two players on the Jets were paying players and buying flights for players and nobody else on the Fighter Jets knew that it was going on.”
Johannesson calls the leagues compensation act “very strict” due to wanting local talent playing for the leagues teams.
The AFL says the team has been stripped of their playoff eligibility, and fines and suspensions have been levied against the offending players. Johannesson says the board felt that enough evidence suggested the two offending players were the only culprits in the incident.
“I just want to make it clear that this was not a Cold Lake Fighter Jets issue. They have to pay the price for two people who made a bad decision.”
The Fighter Jets were due to host the Fort McMurray Monarchs on Saturday in round one.
