Vermilion distillery looks to uncork at the end of summer

A new distillery in Vermilion is hoping to wet some whistles at the end of summer. Copper Cork Distillery is the brainchild of a few eager Lakeland residents. Managing Partner and Head Distiller Todd Ree says the idea to start brewing spirits with his three other partners came naturally.

“Originally three of us had an idea that maybe we should start a craft distillery in Vermilion. It’s amazing how it all jived at once. We knew exactly what we wanted to do and how we would do it so we started the process.”

The distillery is looking to start off by making a line of Vodka and Gin products but other choices will open up. Ree says Whiskey and Rum could be a future product as it requires stricter guidelines on casking to be made in the country.

“As a craft distillery, you don’t jump right into making whiskey because you have to sit and wait for a minimum of three years before you can call it whiskey.”

The operation will be located on Main Street and feature a throwback “speakeasy” theme with a tasting area and tours. The group is now in the process of getting their licenses from the provincial and federal levels.
