Hanson challenges fish rules in Legislature

The MLA for Bonnyville – Cold Lake – St. Paul is hoping to snag some changes with the fishing regulations in the province. Dave Hanson rose in the Alberta Legislature last Thursday to ask Minister of Environment and Parks Jason Nixon if anything can be done to help anglers in the province.

“Will you review the consultations conducted over the last few years, meet with concerned groups and lift the new restrictions imposed in the 2019 regulations?”

The new rules for 2019 included a tag system for catching Walleye and the banning of taking Pike out of some Lakeland lakes. Hanson says the area sees a big blow financially when fishing is limited.

“We are losing opportunities for tourism to Saskatchewan, we’re losing over one million [dollars] in licensing fees alone and municipalities are willing to participate to diversify their economies.”

Nixon says reviews of the policy will come and says the decision will be made based on science and species numbers.
