2015 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby – Calgary, AB
It was a penalty filled night on night 4 of the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby, with drivers in seven of the nine heats taking in many cases big penalties. When the night wrapped up, Codey McCurrach survived the night, and won his first Calgary Stampede day money with a penalty free run of 1:10.33.
From barrel number 1 in the third heat, McCurrach took top time by just 3 one-hundredths of a second over day b1 winner Jamie Laboucane. Logan Gorst, defending champion Kurt Bensmiller and Vern Nolin made out the top five times on the night.
After four runs, Kurt Bensmiller moves to the top of the overall aggregate standings with a four-day total of 4:45.21. That puts him a whopping 1.39 seconds better than day Obrey Motowylo. Mike Vigen, Colt Cosgrave and Jamie Laboucane make out the top five, with Vern Nolin, Logan Gorst and Kelly Sutherland completing the top 8 trying to get into the semi final round. Gary Gorst and Luke Tournier are on the outside looking in, sitting in 9th and 10th place respectively.
The Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy, symbolic of the Calgary Stampede aggregate winner will be declared after 8 nights on Friday, July 10, and the top 8 in the aggregate on that day will go into “Semi Final Saturday.” The top 4 times from the two semi-final heats on semi on Saturday on July 11 will go into the winner-take-all championship final heat. The winner of the final heat will be declared the 2015 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Champion.
