Kids positive ticket program starts in Bonnyville

Mounties on patrol in Bonnyville will be looking for youngsters who make a positive difference in their community. A new “positive ticket” program is now running that sees officers handing out free climbing wall session coupons from the Bonnyville C2 when they catch kids making someone’s day a little better.

Bonnyville RCMP Constable Megan Letang is spearheading the program. She says she got the idea from something that Staff Sergeant Sarah Parke had seen in her days in Lac La Biche.

“I decided we should be doing that here because kids should be encouraged to do some great things in the community and get rewarded for it.”

Officers will be looking for things like wearing a helmet while riding a bike or skateboarding. Letang says the first positive ticket that went out was to a student in high school who helped another student who was hit by a car in a crosswalk.

Letang says the program will help strengthen the relationship between police officers and the community they serve.

“Police aren’t scary. While there are things we may do that may scare children, at the end of the day we’re approaching them in a positive way. They can also approach us and it won’t always be negative. We really want to enforce that relationship with the youth.”

The positive ticket program will run until school starts in September.
