FCM conference lets Lakeland mayors voice pro-oil message

Lakeland mayors and councillors were in Quebec recently looking to showcase the area on a large stage. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities annual conference ran from May 30th to June 2nd in Quebec City. Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland was there. He says his group was looking to sell the idea of Alberta oil to other municipal leaders.

“Really trying to emphasize on the whole resource sector but really selling everyone that getting pipelines in Canada is vital to our province.”

The conference featured speeches from both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as well as Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer and New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh. Copeland says he’s disappointed that none of the federal leaders seemed to mention the importance of Alberta resources in their speech.

“Nobody went there. I think it’s just a conversation where right now the only people who want to talk about it are the municipal leaders.”

Copeland says he was happy to see support for the Alberta side of the energy sector in Quebec. The 2020 conference is due to be hosted in Toronto, Ontario.
