Wildfire considered out of control near Pelican Point

Fire crews are still battling a wildfire near Pelican Point this evening. Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority has released an update after first responding to the alarm at around 5 PM Monday afternoon. Fire officials say the blaze is located between Range Road 474 and Highway 660. The fire was said to have spread quickly due to dry conditions.

80 to 100 firefighters from across the region are currently on scene trying to get control of the blaze along with six water bombers and three helicopters. The fire is considered out of control, but crews are optimistic about the natural fire breaks such as Moose Lake helping to slow it down.

Range Road 474 is now closed at both Highway 28 and Highway 660. RCMP are re-routing traffic. There is no order to evacuate at this time.

BRFA Chief Jay Melvin is asking everyone to stay away from the area and stay off of Moose Lake to allow water bombers access to water.
