Victim Services hosting Friday tour of courthouse

Victim Services in Cold Lake is hoping people will come away with a better knowledge of the legal system tomorrow. The group is hosting tours of the Cold Lake Provincial Court on Friday from 11 until 2 PM. Victim Services Program Manager Dave Zimmerman says the tour day is part of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week across the country.

“[The Week] Raises awareness about issues faced by victims or survivors of crime. It provides victims and survivors of crime information on services, programs and laws that are in place to help.”

The day will allow the public to enjoy a barbecue, tour the building and meet with everyone from a provincial judge to prosecutors and victim services officials to learn more about their role in the justice system. Zimmerman says he hopes the public takes home the thought that they are not alone when a victim of crime.

“We want to make sure that they know they have rights. The victimization doesn’t have to go on. We will help them through the whole criminal justice process.”

The tour and barbecue are free. Cold Lake Victim Services Unit has been serving the city and surrounding area since 1993.
