Bonnyville Legion happy campers with fundraising efforts

The local Legion branch in Bonnyville is celebrating a big night for a great cause. Bonnyville Legion Branch 183 hosted a Steak and Crab night on Saturday in support of children headed to the Kiev’s K Hi Camp. Between Saturday night and other fundraisers, the branch says 12 kids from around the area will be sent to the camp. Jamie Beaupre is with the Bonnyville Legion. He says the idea to help send children to the camp evolved from one happy camper a few years ago.

“When I ran into that person’s grandmother, the grandmother told me ‘That was the best week of that kid’s life. Thank you for that.’ So we got talking and decided that would be something we can do on a larger scale.”

Many businesses around the area donated items and time for a live auction that brought in big bucks. Beaupre says the big turnout was a welcome sight.

“It was great. It was so overwhelming for us because we were so packed so fast. We said we’d cook from five to seven [PM]. Nobody ever shows up at five. At five minutes after four, people started coming in. But we did good.”

The camp has been a staple in the Lakeland since 1965. More information on the Bonnyville Legion as well as Kiev’s K Hi is available online.
