Polls projecting Kenney and UCP taking the reins in Alberta

Alberta has voted for a United Conservative Party majority. Tuesday’s election saw the province unofficially vote the UCP in to a majority government after five years of New Democrat leadership. Jason Kenney is set to become the provinces’ 18th Premier.

The election comes after a campaign that saw both parties battle for votes while endorsing the oil and gas industry. The year was a tumultuous one for the industry, after threatened layoffs in the area and backlogs of crude oil requiring government intervention. Kenney says his first order of business will be to scrap the provincial carbon tax.

The results will remain unofficial until Wednesday night, when Elections Alberta workers will count 223,000 votes made in advance by out-of-riding voters
