Janvier piece unveiled in ceremony at Alberta legislature

The opening ceremonies at the Alberta Legislature featured a world-renowned Cold Lake artist. Alex Janvier was on hand on Monday as the spring sitting in the legislature is set to begin. His work “Sunrise and Sunset” will now permanently hang in the assembly chamber. It was a gift to the building from the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

Legislative Speaker The Honourable Robert E. Wanner says he work is a welcome addition as well as a beacon for direction.

“Sunrise and Sunset will be welcome additions to the Legislative Assembly Chamber. These stunning works of art by Alex Janvier will forever honour the past and present contributions of Indigenous peoples to our province, and serve as reminders to all Members of the Legislative Assembly that we must never lose sight of our ultimate duty, which is to ensure the decisions we make on behalf of our constituents create positive and meaningful change in the lives of all Albertans presently and for generations to come.”

The unveiling was part of a ceremony featuring Indigenous leaders and performers. It also featured traditional smudging and an opening prayer from Métis and Cree speakers.
