LARA offering courses on Hemp, mental health

A pair of Lakeland Ag workshops aim to teach producers about a possible new crop as well as mental health on the farm. On March 26th the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association will host growers starting at 10:30 am at the St. Paul Rec Centre for a workshop on Hemp. Environmental Program Manager Kellie Nichiporik says growing the crop could be profitable for Lakeland farmers.

“Being that it’s a lot more of a marketable product, having a workshop on what the markets are as well as how to grow hemp will be the overall hope for the day.”

On April 5th talks on mental health and suicide when it comes to farmers will be hosted in Mallaig. Nichiporik says the day will be a great exercise for keeping yourself and others safe.

“This is a workshop to know the signs of suicide as well as how to address them within your community as well as resources you can find help with.”

The course begins at 1:30 pm at the Mallaig curling rink. A $15 fee is charged to cover the materials used in the class. Both courses can be registered for by calling LARA at 780-826-7260. More information on these and other LARA events is found on their webpage.
