Bonnyville trailblazer in women’s hockey headed to hall of fame

A Bonnyville hockey legend is taking her seat in the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame. Shirley Cameron was born in the Lakeland. She left for Edmonton at age 17 during a time where women’s teams were few and far between. Cameron eventually joined the Edmonton Chimos of the brand-new Western Women’s Hockey League where she would play for around 20 seasons.

Cameron was also part of the very first Women’s World Championship playing for Canada in 1990. She wrapped up her hockey career coaching the Chimos until the 2006 season. Cameron joins a class including NHL all-star Theo Fleury and Six-time Stanley Cup champion Kevin Lowe.

She is also a member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Cameron will be formally inducted on July 21st in a ceremony in Canmore.
