Lac La Biche shelter eyes new property

A shelter for homeless in the Lakeland is looking to expand. The Lakeland Out of the Elements Shelter currently operates out of a building on 104th Street in Lac La Biche. The group has proposed buying another property in the community as well as becoming a 24 hour a day operation.

At a February 20th special meeting with Lac La Biche County board members from the shelter laid out a request of around $100,000 in operational funding for 2019. The group had received about $60,000 in funding last spring as well as an additional $42,000 in emergency funds this fall. In the meeting, the group described themselves as “at capacity” when it comes to room available.

On Thursday night three students at Portage College spent the night outside the school fundraising for the shelter.
