It was a successful opening night at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the third running of the Saskatoon World Chuckwagon Races. The event is dedicated to the memory of Ashley Richards, who was accidentally killed while working with a road crew in 2012. It was a warm Thursday night under a variably cloudy skies with excellent racetrack conditions. When opening night wrapped up, it was Mark Sutherland who established a new track record of 1:16.55.

From barrel number one in the second heat, Sutherland, driving the Mark Sutherland Invitational Charity Poker Tournament outfit, was the day money winner by 31 one-hundredths of a second faster over Layne MacGillivray who settled for second place on the night. Defending Saskatoon champion Kirk Sutherland was third, followed by Chanse Vigen and “the Hound,” Codey MCCurrach. Sutherland’s track record time beat the previous track record of 1:16.81 set by John Walters back in 2013 by 26 one-hundredths of a second.
