Hanson points to tweet after window smashing

A local MLA says a tweet with what he calls “false-claims” may be the reason for vandalism at his office. St. Paul RCMP say they were sent to UCP Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills MLA David Hanson’s office at 43rd Street and 50th Avenue in St. Paul at about 11:30 pm last night. Several windows had been broken with bricks and rocks.

In a release issued today, Hanson says he received an email from someone claiming that they had broken the windows. Hanson says the man had seen a tweet from NDP Minister of Community and Social Services Irfan Sabir.

“The individual specifically pointed to a tweet that claimed that United Conservatives want to cut 20 per cent [sic] and suggesting that AISH payments would be eliminated.”

“These claims are patently false. Not only have there been no such commitments, but this falsehood is demonstrably untrue, having been repeatedly debunked.”

Hanson goes on to say he does not lay the blame on the NDP party.

“With regard to the incident at my constituency office, to be clear, I believe individuals are responsible for their own actions and do not mean to imply that the individual responsible for this vandalism is working on behalf of any party, nor that the NDP is responsible for this act.”

“That said, with an election expected soon, this incident should be a reminder for responsibility. Fear-mongering and peddling false claims for political gain can cause undue distress when programs and services people depend on are being used as a political ploy.”

A full release can be found on the UCP caucus website.

St. Paul RCMP says a 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with mischief. He has since been released and will be in St. Paul Provincial Court on February 21st. At press time the tweet in question was still up on Sabir’s Twitter page. Sabir couldn’t be reached for comment.
