Nominations extended for Great Kids award

Nominations are going to be extended for a provincial award with past Lakeland winners. The Great Kids award is handed out by the Government of Alberta to honour young ones that help their communities and inspire change. Alberta Communications Advisor Laura Fedoriw says nominations are as easy as heading online to the official website.

“You can submit a description about why you think the young person should be nominated along with two letters of support.”

Among the winners of the award in 2018 was 12-year-old Quinlan Grandbois of Cold Lake and 11-year-old Jadah Sparklingeyes of Lac La Biche. Grandbois often donates time to local charities and helped save family members after a mishap while boating. Sparklingeyes is a Pathfinders group member and advocates for mental health in the community.

Fedoriw says the stories she gets to hear from the kids is inspiring.

“Maybe they’ve overcome a physical or mental illness or stood up against bullying; Despite that, they’ve gone on to do great things.”

The new deadline for nominations is January 31st. The hardware will be handed out at a special ceremony at the Fantasyland Hotel at West Edmonton Mall in the fall.
