New Peace Officer on the streets in Bonnyville

People in Bonnyville are already noticing a new patrol car in town. Shaz Khan has been on duty as the new Town of Bonnyville Peace Officer for about a week. He comes to Bonnyville after seven years of work in the Wood Buffalo region as well as the city of Brooks.

Khan’s job around town will be to enforce bylaws as well as the new legal cannabis-use laws. Bonnyville Assistant C.A.O Bill Rogers says he’ll also be working with the local RCMP and firefighters on protective programs already in place. His first few days on duty have been mostly working with town administration to hash out his duties and getting a good familiarization in with the layout of the town.

The town had previously allocated about $100,000 to hire a peace officer in their budget talks late last year. That money is expected to come out of an RCMP reserve fund with any remaining expenses coming out of taxes.
