55 plus winter games looking for volunteers

The Alberta 55 plus winter games will need some help from volunteers. The planning for the games is in a full-steam-ahead mode as the February 29th opening day approaches. Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland is also Chair of the Alberta 55 plus Winter Games Committee. He says it’s so far, so good on planning a great showcase for the area.

“It’s all looking very promising and certainly for the economy and our area, it’s desperately needed.”

The games will run over 4 days including opening and closing ceremonies. Senior athletes and their families from across the province will be arriving at the end of February. Copeland says the local economy should see a good shot in the arm from the visitors.

“We estimate probably about a thousand athletes coming into the area. Conservatively, around five to six hundred hotel rooms will be occupied for at least three days.”

The MD of Bonnyville council recently announced it was handing over $15,000 and use of both the C2 in Bonnyville and Kinosoo Ridge Ski Resort at no cost. Copeland says the next big step is to sign on some volunteers to help put on the show.

“We need probably a couple hundred volunteers. Hopefully, people will step forward and we’ll have a job for them.”

People interested in volunteering can find out more at the games’ official website or with the city of Cold Lake.
