Health Minister encourages Albertans to get flu shot

This year’s flu is beginning to clog up emergency rooms, limit access to hospital beds and put a strain on other health care services.

Five Albertans have died after being admitted into the ICU with 965 lab confirmed cases of the flu, with H1N1 the predominant strain among people suffering. Most people affected by influenza over the past few weeks in Alberta are young adults.

Health Minister Fred Horne says everyone who has not received a free flu shot should get one, especially those who are more vulnerable to symptoms.

Only 21 percent of Albertans and 49 percent of health care workers received the flu shot, which Horner say is way too low.
