It’s now a waiting game between the Lakeland and Imperial Oil. The Alberta Energy Regulator approved expansion on the Imperial Cold Lake site in late August along with some requirements that must be met by the energy giant. The project would be a two billion dollar expansion at the site 20 kilometres from the city of Cold Lake. Among the construction would be a new plant to extract bitumen from underground.
Imperial says the construction would employ over 600 people between construction and operation. The company says they’re now waiting to see if they’ll even go ahead with the idea. Low Canadian oil prices and proposed legislation are currently a few battles energy companies in the province are dealing with.
Imperial originally submitted their application for the project in 2016.
