Peace officer in Bonnyville by early 2019 if all goes well

The town of Bonnyville is steaming ahead in its quest to get a peace officer. The town has received the ok from the province to hire an officer and include it in the 2019 capital budget. Town council says around $100,000 has been planned for wages and benefits for the new officer, while an additional $13,000 will be needed for training and other fees.

The job posting is currently advertised in different publications. The RCMP in Bonnyville were enforcing bylaws in town before the idea of a permanent peace officer was pitched. Council says the legalization of marijuana also aided in their decision.

Mayor Gene Sobolewski figures the new officer will be hired by early 2019 depending on the process.
