Lakeland prepares for Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day ceremonies are being planned across the Lakeland as the 100th anniversary of the end of first world war arrives. One ceremony will take place at the Centennial Centre in Bonnyville hosted by the local Legion Branch. The gathering will feature a spoken-word ceremony, performances from community singers and prayers offered in both English and French. The legion hopes everyone will be in their seats by 10:15.

“Buff” Hite is the Legion branch manager in Bonnyville. He says the wreath-laying ceremony is especially poignant.

“Wreaths for everybody starting with the Queen and Governor General of Canada. It goes right down to anyone who wants to lay a wreath.”

Cold Lake will also feature a ceremony at the Energy Centre. The Cold Lake Legion and 4 Wing are the hosts for the day. Everyone should be seated by 10:30. St. Paul, meanwhile, will gather at the Recreation Centre at 10 AM to give thanks and remember.

Hite is himself a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He says the importance of the day is indescribable for other vets.

“I did four different peacekeeping missions and I lost friends in just about every one of them. It means a lot to me, to have people come up.”
