Bonnyville student who brought gun in backpack sentenced

A Bonnyville student who brought a handgun in his backpack to school has learned his punishment. On October 25th the 17-year-old student, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in Bonnyville court and was sentenced to 12 months probation as well as a ban on owning any guns for two years.

The charges stem from a March incident where RCMP say they were notified that the student was carrying a gun in his backpack to Bonnyville Centralized High School. After an investigation, police laid charges. Mounties say at no point did the gun leave the backpack.
