Lakeland MP has emergency debate request quashed

Shannon Stubbs says she’s trying to stick up for Canadians. The Conservative MP representing Lakeland rose in the House of Commons on Tuesday requesting an Emergency Debate on the handling of the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. Stubbs outlined a few reasons she requested the debate, including gridlock in the process.

“Construction is stalled indefinitely, costs are increasing. Canadian taxpayers deserve answers of how and when the pipeline they now own will be built.”

She also cited the “thousands of jobs” she says were lost with the decision to delay the project. Stubbs broke with parliamentary procedure in her statement, addressing Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi by name. House Speaker Geoff Regan reminded her of the fact.

“I think the honourable member for Lakeland is aware we don’t refer to members by their names. She has a letter she’s referring too. One must remember to make the adjustments when one is making the presentation to the House.”

Regan later denied the request, citing that it did not meet “The exigency of the standing order”. This was Stubbs first addressing of the pipeline since the fall session began on Monday.
