Increase Supervision by Police at Jesse Lake Parking Lot

The Town of Bonnyville is looking at ways to control dangerous driving near Jesse Lake. Mayor of Bonnyville, Gene Sobolewski says town council received a letter from a concerned parent over stunting at the Jesse Lake parking lot. “A parent from one of the students at Notre Dame (high school) sent a letter,” Mayor Sobolewski continues, “the complaints was the stunting, doing the donuts and things like that.”

Mayor Sobolewski says the dangerous driving is particularly bad during the lunch hour and after-school until around 5:00pm. Mayor Sobolewski says this is not a new issue for the town, “I’ve heard the complaints before.” He says the town invited the RCMP to chambers on April 28th, “they are going to start stepping up enforcement and issuing tickets.” The mayor says the police and town are on the same page,”we agree that safety is a huge issue.”

A press release from the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment on May 4th indicates that patrols are already underway for the area. Stating that on On Wednesday April 29th, 2015 the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment conducted a traffic initiative focusing on that identified area which resulted in several tickets being issued including one for stunting.

This initiative was a good way to move into May 2015 as the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan Calendar focuses on Young Drivers/ Distracted Driving.  The Bonnyville RCMP Detachment would like to remind residents, especially young drivers, that distracted driving will be strictly enforced and we encourage people to drive safely.
