Popular lakeland resort gets provincial funding

A popular destination for Lakeland campers will see some provincial money. The Kikino Silver Birch Resort at the Kikino Metis Settlement is located north of Vilna on Highway 36. It features campsites and cabins along the shore of Whitefish Lake.

On Tuesday the province announced the resort will be getting a $700,000 boost. The grant will be used to upgrade ten cabins, power 69 campsites and other modernization projects. Government officials say the grant will provide around 12,700 hours of work to eight part-time workers in the region.

Kikino Metis Settlement Administrator Roger Littlechilds says the grant will help everyone in the area and not just the settlement.

“We would like to thank the province as this investment will help our businesses grow and attract more tourists to our Settlement and the surrounding area. Having more prosperous businesses also means more revenue we can use to sustain important services for our community.”

The money was provided as part of the Aboriginal Business Fund. The fund has provided $15 million since 2015.
