Cold Lake City council says a special meeting held last Thursday was productive for both junior hockey clubs in the city. Council held a special meeting where the agenda included memorandums of understanding between both the Cold Lake Ice of the North-East Alberta Junior B Hockey League as well as the new Cold Lake Wings of the Western Provinces Hockey Association.
Among the discussions with the clubs were agreements on rental rates, use of facilities and revenue. Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland says hammering out the details between the two clubs is needed to make sure they have a smooth operation.
“It’s a contract between ourselves as a city and the organizations. Each mirrored each other. Council is hoping for the best for both hockey organizations.”
Article six in the memorandum relating to the Cold Lake Ice states in-part:
“Acknowledgement of the existence of the Western Provinces Hockey Association (WHPA) by the Cold Lake Ice Junior B Hockey Organization and their commitment to work cooperatively in relation to all matters covered by this agreement, including advertising opportunities and the scheduling of games.”
Copeland says he sees cooperation between the two clubs as key to success for hockey in the city.
“We are the largest city in the area. Eventually, Junior A hockey was going to come to Cold Lake. It’s coming in the form of the Wings. I’m sure everyone is going to get along.”
The Wings and Ice will share an expanded Imperial Oil Place for the 2018/2019 season. The Ice see home action on September 29th while the Wings have yet to have their schedule finalized.
