Cold Lake crime rate increasing says Stats Can

The numbers aren’t good in a new report from Stats Canada on crime in the Lakeland. The national agency says Cold Lake now has 17th highest crime rate in cities with a population of 10,000 and more. in 2016, Cold Lake sat at 24th on the Overall crime severity index list. Last year, the city jumped to number 17.

Cold Lake RCMP Staff Sergeant Jeremie Landrie says he can understand why numbers like this would have a disheartening effect on regular law-abiding residents.

“We know in general that Albertans are concerned about crime rates in their communities. We also understand that people are feeling vulnerable and frustrated.”

Landrie says a number of new initiatives are being implemented in communities in the MD. He mentions that so far results in the 2018 calendar year are positive when it comes to fighting overall crime in the area.

A report released by the Cold Lake detachment highlights the work officers are doing. The report, which covers June 2017 to June 2018, shows multiple improvements in crimes including sexual assault and robbery.

Landrie says when it comes to making the community a safer place He hopes the community will continue to support police officers day in and day out.

“When you do see a crime, phone the police. Cooperate. Provide a statement to assist us in our investigation. We can work together in trying to reduce crime.”

The Stats Can report says the MD of Bonnyville also saw an increase in overall crime between 2016 and 2017.
