Mounties say standoff leads to shooting of man in Frog Lake

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the circumstances around a 40-year-old man’s death after Elk Point mounties say an attempt to arrest the man in Frog Lake turned fatal. Police are saying on July 19th at around 10 pm members from the Elk Point detachment were looking for the man in relation to a robbery investigation. Police tried to arrest a man after finding him at a rural home on the Frog Lake First Nation.

A standoff lasting around seven hours took place. Mounties say they tried multiple times to talk to the man through a negotiator. Later into the evening RCMP say a confrontation took place where a police pistol was discharged. Mounties confirmed today the man had died of his injuries.

Police are saying no one else was hurt in the incident. The Director of Law Enforcement for the province has been notified of the situation. RCMP are continuing their investigation along with ASIRT.
