On April 21st, 2015 at approximately 3:30 AM, the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment conducted a traffic stop with a suspicious vehicle on Highway 657. When speaking with the occupants, one male appeared to be lying about his name and could not produce identification.  The male was advised that he would be detained for investigation however he took off on foot when the Constable attempted to handcuff the male.  Police caught the male a short after a short foot chase however he continued to resist and attempt to flee.  During the struggle with the male, he grabbed a hold of the Constable’s Tazer attempting to disarm the police officer.  After a few minutes of ground fighting, the Constable was able to control and handcuff the male.  Once in police custody, the male’s identity was learned which also revealed that he had outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Elk Point RCMP Detachment and Edmonton Police Service and well as conditions from pending charges.  The male was identified as a 31 year old resident of Bonnyville with an extensive criminal record.  The male faces new charges of Assaulting a Peace Officer, Disarming a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction and Breaching Conditions of Release.  The male remains in custody after being denied bail.  The other occupants of the vehicle were not involved in any criminal activity.
