New Cold Lake Junior A team shaping up for fall puck drop

The new Junior A hockey team in Cold Lake is starting to come together says league officials. The team, which was announced in February, will be known as the “Cold Lake Wings”. The club will be a part of a five-team Western Province Hockey Association, a new league affiliated with the Western States Hockey League south of the border.

Brian Brown is communications leader for the new league. He says the league may see expansion even before the first game is played.

“As of right now we have five teams registered within the league, with the possibility of two more still coming in.”

The league expects to drop the puck on their inaugural season on October 15th. Brown says because of the unique partnership between the WPHA and the WSHL, the first couple of weeks will feature games with both Canadian and American teams.

“There are three teams that are going to be doing a ‘northern sweep’ that are from the states. They’ll be coming up to Canada to play against the teams from mid-October and the first two weeks of November.”

Brown expects to have an announcement for a new head coach as early as tomorrow, calling the candidate for the job “A player with NHL experience.”

The team had announced a logo early last week. Brown says it has since been pulled as it was found to infringe on some symbols used by the United States Air Force. A new logo and colours are expected shortly.

More information on both the team and the league can be found on the Cold Lake Wings Facebook page and the WPHA league website.
