Building demolition waste in St. Paul finally finds proper home

Members of the community as well as town council are shaking their heads after some waste from a few building demolitions in the County of St. Paul ended up on private property and not in the Evergreen Landfill. Last Septemeber, The C.A.O for the town had hired a contractor to demolish two structures in the county. One was the former animal shelter, the other a home just north of the town office.

The contractor, along with the town of St. Paul council and a private landowner in the county all agreed to dump the waste on the landowner’s property. Shortly after the dump, Alberta Environment and Parks stepped in, saying it should never have occurred in the first place. The waste may have contained traces of both lead paint and asbestos, causing a need for it to be moved.

Council is estimating 46 truckloads of debris were moved last month. There is no word yet on how much the clean up has cost.
