Elk Point goes with RF for bylaw officer

The Town of Elk Point will have a new bylaw officer by Canada Day. Town council announced in their last meeting they had come to terms with RF Protection and K9 Services out of St. Paul to supply an officer to handle the job. The contract will free up local RCMP officers who were handling animal control and bylaw as well as their regular duties.

Manager of RF Protection Rob Forbister will be the new officer in the community. He says he’s currently working out the fine details of his job with the town. He wants to start his time with three months of awareness and education.

“Going out and meeting people, introducing myself. Letting them know that we are out there. It’s an educational thing.”

Animal control will be one aspect Rob will cover, based on complaints the town gets. The town believes that hiring an officer from a company instead of a peace officer will benefit the community in both officer experience as well as budget-wise. Forbister says his company is no stranger to providing security and enforcement services around the Lakeland.

“Mobile patrol, which is what we do in Elk Point at this time. We do events, anything that has to do with liquor, we go and provide security service for that as well.”

Forbister says he’s signed on for a six month trial period. He expects to meet with Elk Point after that six months and sign a longer deal. He is set to begin duties on July 1st.
