Muriel Lake trail will soon have equine guests

A popular trail around Muriel Lake could soon have the sound of hoof beats around it. MD of Bonnyville Council has decided to allow the Muriel Lake trail to be used by those on horseback. The trail is currently a walking -only path around the lake, located 15 kilometers south of Bonnyville. Director of Parks and Recreation for the MD Chris McCord says The idea of letting riders bring their horses just seemed perfect for the area.

“We’re always looking for more recreation ideas in the MD. This one seemed to make sense and really fit well with what e have going on in Muriel Lake.”

The MD says no major changes will have to be done to make the trail usable for riders. McCord says a little work will be done in making a campsite and stalls for the horses.

“The plan is to use a clear space that we have right now that isn’t being used for anything. We’ll make a couple stalls, put some campsites up there as well.”

Council is hoping that riders and walkers alike can share the trail with no incidents. Riders will be expected to clean up after their horses at all times in the area. McCord says her department is currently crunching some numbers on the project. She is hoping riders can star saddling up by mid to end June.
