Kinosoo Ridge weeds might not get your goat this year

The MD of Bonnyville has responded to a request to control weeds on Kinosoo Ridge with a hearty “You goat it”. The MD is currently in the planning stages to bring in goats to graze the hill and take care of weeds throughout the summer months. The department of Parks and Recreation is currently working with MD Ag services on the plan.

Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture Chris McCord says getting all the goats to the ridge is in the early stages.

“(Ag Services) is waiting to get the bids in from the farmers that own the goats, then we’ll go from there.”

The idea came about after similar programs, including one in the city of Calgary. The program in Calgary had hoped for the goats to eat the weeds within a week. McCord says it ended up only being a couple of days for the goats to do their job.

McCord says the idea of using goats as a natural weed killer is perfect for an area like Kinosoo ridge.

“We don’t have to spray in sensitive areas, for one thing. Considering that Kinosoo Ridge is in a provincial park rec area, that’s fantastic.”

There has been no time frame given for when the goats could pop up around the ridge. The MD plans to hold an event for the public to come see the goats in action when they are grazing. More details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
