Fire on highway 55 “looking pretty good”

Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority is feeling optimistic about a fire they’re fighting in the Lakeland. The fire broke out on Saturday near Highways 55 and 892, north of Ardmore. BRFA Chief Brian McEvoy says the fire crews are working hard on putting out the blaze.

“It’s at the point where it’s going to be moved to ‘being held’, just before they move to under control. We have one stubborn spot in there where the fire has gotten into the black spruce and into the peat that we’re just digging out.”

BRFA says a full fire ban is not expected to be put in place as of yet. A fire restriction was issued yesterday. Small , supervised campfires are still allowed under the new rules.

Chief McEvoy says the fire authority doesn’t want to ruin anyones May Long fun. All-terrain vehicles are especially a concern. McEvoy says he knows being extra careful in dry climates could save some acres of land and even a life.

“Be very careful and monitor any kind of debris build up on your engines and exhaust so we dont have fires popping up during the long weekend.”
