Cannabis open house in Cold Lake still leaves questions to be answered

The City of Cold Lake is still working out its bylaws around the sale of Cannabis. The city recently hosted an open house for the public to hear information around sale and consumption of the drug. Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland says one of the topics discussed is distance between shops and areas like schools.

“If you want to get into this, how far back your setbacks are gonna be. We don’t want to have a cannabis shop right next to a school or park.”

Copeland says Cold Lake council is working on making the transition of cannabis from illegal to legal as safe and efficient as possible. He says stigmas have to be forgotten as they move ahead with work.

“We’re not objecting to it. We’re gonna try to work as best we can. We know there’s interest in the business community to open up shops.”

The federal government had said that Cannabis sales will be legalized in the country by April of 2018. That date has been pushed back to the summer.
