St. Paul resident honoured by Governor General

A Lakeland man who has been volunteering in his community for over 40 years was honoured by the Governor General of Canada recently. Bill Blower received the Sovereign’s Medal, given to a Canadian citizen who has made significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community in Canada or abroad and issued by Governor General Julie Payette, at a ceremony held by the St. Paul FCSS last week.

Bill has been a mainstay in the St. Paul volunteer scene. He started in 1974 working with the volunteer Fire Department then shifted over to the local Legion. In between he’s found time to help the St. Paul Ag society, Citizens on Patrol and others. Blower says he’s received other honors for his volunteering before, but calls this one “unexpected.”
