Local Metis Settlements to benefit from ID-349 re-distribution

The re-distribution of cash from the ID 349 shake up is benefiting two Metis communities. The Fishing Lake and Elizabeth Metis Settlements are getting about $1.2 million from the provinces new Municipal Sustainability Initiative, a program that draws funds from the ID 349 agreement.

Jeanette Calliou-Stuparyk is the Administrator for the Elizabeth Metis Settlement, she says the money goes a long way in building a happy town.

“We’re very thankful for the regional support that we did get in achieving our goal to evolve a healthy community.”

Alberta Department of Municipal Affairs says smaller communities with little in the way of government are eligible for the funding. The department looks at a variety of factors to determine who gets what.

Calliou-Stuparyk says any funding received will be put into making the community better.

“We will invest that money in our essential infrastructure. (It is) much needed.”

The Alberta government changed up the funding distribution on ID 349 last November.
