Cold Lake campground could see expansion in future

Cold Lake Provincial Park campgrounds could soon see some expansion as the region becomes a more popular destination for campers. Provincial Minister of Alberta Environment & Parks Shannon Phillips has addressed a letter sent by the Cold Lake Corporate Priorities Committee asking for research into the popularity of the campgrounds, and Mayor Craig Copeland says some growth is just what the parks could use to help make sure everyone can get a spot to camp.

“It’s been a long journey, going on quite a few years in this area. We haven’t seen any growth in provincial campsites until just recently, so we’re really thankful for that. We’re starting to see some development at English Bay campsite which will increase availability on weekends. The data is indicating that Cold Lake Provincial Park is pretty much 100 percent full, English Bay is starting to get that way too.”

In the letter received from the Minister, Phillips said they will be exploring the idea of expanding the Cold Lake Provincial Park campgrounds and adding a new interpretive centre there. She goes on to say that consultation will be done first with Cold Lake First Nations and the Berry Point Elders Working Group. Copeland says a variety of ideas for land use are being kicked around.

“They’re gonna look at options on Crown Land in the Lakeland area. I think we’re both on the same page, province and city council wanting to really increase tourism in this area.”

Work on English Bay would include the addition of three camping loops, and a beach-day use area.
